Whilst wandering around the Web, I realized that everyone seems to have a website, so I thought, “why not” and added this splendid contribution to the Internet!
This site is rather varied, as my interests have been somewhat diverse over the years, so I have picked some of the more recent and some of the longer-lasting activites!
I have been interested in landscape photography for some time, so I have included a Photo Gallery, which shows some of the pictures I have take from various places, including Worsley, near Manchester, Rivington, near Chorley and the Lake District. I have also included some fairground pictures, showing various fair organs and rides.
My interest in fair organs began a few years ago when I was introduced to the world of mechanical music. I am an electronics engineer by trade and had been asked if I could devise some software which would print stencils for the production of punched music. On this site, I give a brief description of how some of those mechanical systems operate, just to give you a taste!
It would be an insult to the professional people in the trade, if some upstart came along and tried to explain something that would normally take a lifetime of experience, so I only intend to explain some of the principles in general use, leading, eventually, to my own ‘fields of expertise’, Electronics, MIDI and the Midioli software.
The electronic systems described on the Harmonie Orchestrion page are only prototypes, but, as with everything else, I am working on it!
Other systems (not necessarily related to music) are ‘on the drawing board’, so watch this space.
I needed a trading name, so I combined ‘MIDI’ and ‘Gavioli’, who was a pioneer of mechanical music and formed ‘Midioli’.
Some pages have animations or photographs, which take about 20 to 30 seconds to download (at standard connection speeds), so please be patient when viewing these pages. Of course, if you have broadband, then this will be somewhat faster (you show off!).
Some of the pages are rather sparsely populated and are still ‘under construction’ (eventually). Others may end, abruptly!
If you spot any errors, or have any suggestions, please let me know. Particularly on the subject of mechanical music, where available information is somewhat vague, sometimes non-existent, or locked away in an experts head!
Note that this site requires Internet Explorer ® Version 4 or later. I am not to sure about Netscape Navigator ®, so I would appreciate some feedback from someone using it.
